The Book Fairies believes that every child should have access to books and experience the magic of reading. Books allow children to travel to wondrous places without leaving the house, teach new skills and interesting facts, and inspire the imagination. With 1 in 4 children in our area growing up without learning how to read, it is imperative that we supply the necessary books to change these staggering illiteracy statistics.
Did you know:
-Over 70% of America's inmates cannot read above a 4th grade level.
-Nearly 85% of the juveniles who face trial in the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate, proving that there is a close relationship between illiteracy and crime.
-90% of high school dropouts are on welfare.
Price is the #1 barrier to book ownership. Programs have limited funds and 94% of teachers use their own money to provide books & resources for their students.
